PART 1 OF 3
The realistic average pace your crew can maintain while repeatedly covering the travel portion of the job.
Your walking speed is not your sustained working pace. A single fast trip does not include repeated pushing, recovery, difficult terrain, extreme weather, crew fatigue or limited access.
One measured run gives you a starting observation. Repeated observations give you a better working average. As you collect job data through the season, refine this number and learn how conditions affect your crew.
Distance is the first hidden number. Sustained pace is the second. Both are needed to turn movement into realistic travel time.
Your first estimate does not have to be perfect. The more real trips and conditions you observe, the more useful your sustained-pace baseline becomes.

The calculation can only be as accurate as the information entered. Use your real job numbers whenever possible.
Already use a machine or front-mounted cart? Your workflow may already reduce some travel time. The W.I.T.C.H.™ differs because the wheelbarrow can disconnect and continue beyond the machine's footprint for final placement.
A brisk human walking pace is often around 3 mph. As simple planning references, an empty wheelbarrow may be around 2.5 mph and a loaded wheelbarrow around 2.0 mph. Those are not sustained working paces. Difficult terrain, extreme weather, crew performance and limited access can lower the pace that can actually be maintained over repeated trips.

Don’t measure your fastest trip. Measure the pace your crew can realistically maintain over repeated trips and real job conditions.
Loaded pace: Measure several repeated loaded trips over a representative section of a real job. Track the total distance traveled and the total elapsed travel time.
Empty return pace: Measure the return trips the same way.
Heat, hills, slopes, soft ground, congestion, fatigue and brief recovery stops that are necessary to keep working should remain part of the elapsed travel time.
If a worker needs to stop briefly because of the physical effort required to continue pushing the load, that is part of the crew’s real sustained pace.
Lunch, scheduled breaks, setup, conversations and other stops unrelated to covering the travel distance should not be included.
Loading time—and time spent waiting for a wheelbarrow to be loaded—is real job time, but it is not travel pace. Track that separately when evaluating the overall workflow or total cycle time.
That distinction matters because staging, equipment, additional wheelbarrows or a different loading system may improve the overall workflow even when the travel distance itself does not change.
Measure representative conditions. If summer heat, hills, soft ground or late-day fatigue are part of your work, measure under those conditions. The more representative the test, the more useful your sustained-pace number becomes.
Use the same basic method: actual travel distance ÷ actual elapsed travel time under representative load, terrain and operating conditions.
Use the machine’s real working pace—not simply its advertised maximum speed.
Keep loading, waiting and other non-travel time separate when measuring machine travel pace as well.
Once you have a baseline, retest after changing routing, staging, access, equipment or workflow.
Then compare the new sustained pace with the old one—and separately consider whether the change also improved your overall cycle time.
