What Controls the Push?

Every loaded wheelbarrow trip is shaped by the load, the route, the weather, the distance and the trips that came before it.
WALKING SPEED IS NOT WORKING SPEED.
A wheelbarrow trip involves more than simply walking from one point to another.
Each cycle includes lifting the handles, getting the load moving, controlling it across the route, slowing for obstacles, positioning and dumping the material, and returning for the next load.
A worker’s normal walking pace does not account for everything the job requires.
EVERY CONDITION CHANGES THE PUSH.
Load and Balance
Total weight, material density, load balance, and weight at the handles all change the effort required.
Distance and Repetition
Every loaded run is followed by an empty return—and then the same cycle begins again.
Terrain and Slope
Soft turf, gravel, uneven ground, roots, hills, and changing traction all affect pace and control.
Heat and Humidity
Temperature, direct sun, humidity, hydration, and recovery can change what a crew can sustain.
Access and Obstacles
Gates, turns, curbs, beds, parked vehicles, and narrow routes add slowing, steering, and repositioning.
The Worker and the Hour
Strength, experience, pace, and recovery differ by person—and accumulated fatigue changes them as the day continues.

The crew at 9 a.m. is not the same crew at 3 p.m.
Distance does not affect only one push.
Its effect is repeated with every loaded trip and every empty return.
PUSHING ISN’T THE PROBLEM. DISTANCE IS.
Pushing gives the wheelbarrow its access, control, maneuverability, and precision at final placement.
The problem is making the worker push every foot of transportation distance before that control is needed.
PUSHING AND TOWING ARE AFFECTED DIFFERENTLY.
Both require a safe route and good judgment.
But the conditions do not accumulate in the same way.
When the Worker Pushes
Load, distance, terrain, weather, obstacles, repetition, and fatigue affect the person behind the handles.
As the trips accumulate, maintaining the same working pace can become more difficult.
When the Machine Tows
Terrain, slope, traction, route, load ratings, and safe operating speed still matter.
But the machine does not physically tire because it is completing trip 29.
